Storyline
Levi Kane (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) are elite snipers assigned to solitary guard towers on opposite sides of a vast, fog-shrouded gorge. Their orders are clear: shoot anything that attempts to emerge from the abyss. As days turn into weeks, the monotony and isolation weigh heavily on both. Through binoculars and handwritten notes, Levi and Drasa begin to communicate, sharing personal stories and forming a deep bond. Their relationship evolves from professional camaraderie to a profound emotional connection. The tranquility is shattered when they encounter mutated creatures, remnants of World War II soldiers transformed by a chemical mishap. These “Hollow Men” pose a significant threat, leading Levi and Drasa to question the true purpose of their mission. Investigations reveal a secretive research corporation responsible for the experiments that created the Hollow Men. Determined to end the menace, the duo initiates a self-destruct protocol to collapse the gorge and eradicate the creatures. In the ensuing chaos, Levi is presumed dead. However, in a twist, he reappears, leading to a heartfelt reunion with Drasa.

Review
Critics have offered mixed reviews for “The Gorge.” The film’s unique blend of genres has been both praised and critiqued. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com noted that while the movie “takes too long in its set-up and rushes its ending,” its mid-section “lives up to its genre-mashing potential.” He highlighted the film’s ability to combine elements of horror, action, sci-fi, and romance, creating a blend that, despite occasional muddling, remains satisfying. Jack Coyle of the Associated Press described the film as “ridiculous” and “preposterous,” pointing out that despite high production quality, the movie struggles with tonal consistency, resulting in an “intriguing but empty genre mash-up.” On the other hand, Patrick Gibbs of SLUG Magazine found the film to be “thrillingly diverting popcorn entertainment,” appreciating its embrace of B-movie sensibilities and the unexpected effectiveness of the central romance. Audience reactions have also varied, with some viewers praising the chemistry between Teller and Taylor-Joy, while others felt the plot became convoluted.
